Month one for the PB Weight Loss Contest has seen a number ofinteresting trends. The group of 90 people lost just under 360 pounds(350to be accurate) for an average of roughly 4 pounds per person (or a poundper week). While the majority of people did see success (over 80% lostweight), 7 people lost nothing, 4 actually gained weight and one personfound out she was pregnant. We had a number of people lose over 10 poundsof weight loss for the month, with one person losing an amazing 14 poundsduring the first month of the contest. Congratulations to all.
What does 350 pounds of fat equate to? To burn off that many caloriesthe group would have had to run over 8000 miles in one month. Or, to gain350 pounds a person would have to eat just over 4000 Tim Horton's big gooeydonuts in 30 days. Coach Barrie lost 6 pounds during the first month andfound it quite easy in spite of some set-backs with 3-4 dinner parties hehad to attend over the month. Setbacks for people included boat cruises(with all you could eat), late night office meetings (with take-out), andnot getting serious about really losing weight. A number of people foundthat exercising only while still over-eating did not net them much totalweight loss. The best combination for successful people was a 1/4 to 1/3caloric reduction in food-intake and 30-60 minutes of cardio activity 4-5times a week. Not surprising 10% of the group dropped out of the programover the first month (this is much lower then normal data for a weight-lossprogram).
Personal Best continued to send out WELLNESS NEWSLETTERS with ideas onhow to safely lose weight (and keep it off). If you were under the 4 poundweight loss group average, perhaps you need to be a bit more focused onexercise, caloric reduction or both this month. If you were above thataverage, we encourage you to keep up the great work.
