LET THE GAMES BEGIN
Later today, after nearly a decade of planning and hard, work Great Britain will host the Olympic Games for the third time in its history (the first country to do so). The 1908 Games were actually suppose to be in Rome, but because of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the Italian Government backed out of their commitment and England agreed to host the 1908 Games. While over 200+ countries will be in London this week, only 22 countries competed in the 1908 Games and England easily defeated the USA for the overall gold medal standings. England was scheduled to host the 1944 Summer Olympics, but the games were cancelled due to World War II. Four years later, England did host the games for the 2nd time. Fifty-nine countries made it to the 1948 Olympic Games (with Japan and Germany being asked to stay away for security reasons). Finally later today, after spending nearly $14 billion, London will GET THIS PARTY STARTED. Having been to London many times, its amazing how the Olympic Games have transformed the broken down east side of London. What had been old, broken down factories and buildings, are now incredible new sporting facilities, housing for 15 000 people (which will be sold after the Olympic Games end).
