FINAL TUCSON WARM-WEATHER CAMP

Last chance to train in the warm Tucson sun --- April 24th - May 1st.  Great outdoors swims, bikes, runs --- and the incredible Mt. Lemmon climb!

Personal Best has been running warm weather training camps in Tucson and Florida and Texas for over 25 consecutive years. During that time, we have gotten to know how to create the perfect training, learning and warm-weather vacation. Before each camp, we identify your specific needs and customize sessions specifically to your needs. Tucson has become one of North America’s greatest training cities for cycling, triathlon, running, hiking and yoga/core

MT LEMON FACTOR: No City in North America has a more exciting series of different rides to pick one. Most famous is the epic, 25 mile MT LEMON ride. Start with cactus in the desert at mile zero and end the 25 miles next to the snow-boarders at the top of Mt Lemon and get your well earned piece of APPLE PIE or half-kilogram slice of Pizza and Personal Best. “I CLIMBED MT LEMON SOUVENIR WATER BOTTLE” from coach Shepley. Personal Best staff will support all riders with van support up the mountain.

HEATED OUT-DOOR SWIMS: If your in the tri-camps, you will enjoy the amazing outdoor swims looking at Tucson’s beautiful mountains. Coaches will start the week off with video-taping, then customize your workouts based on your needs.

ELITE COACHING DIFFERENCE: Hall OF Fame and Olympic coach Barrie Shepley will be overseeing each camp. With 25+ years of coaching expertise, and athletes who have won medals at Ironman, World Championships and all race distances, Barrie has the experience to make sure your needs are met.

SEAN BECHTEL: One of North America’s most respected up and coming elite triathletes. With a varsity swim and run background, the 25 year old professional has got off the bike with Craig Alexander, Chris McCormack and Greg Bennett. Bechtel set course records twice in 2008, was winner of the Muskoka Long Course in June 2009 and the top Canadian elite in the 70.3 Muskoka in Sept. Sean will make Tucson his home for Feb till May. Bechtel will be at each day of your camp, sharing his expertise in all three sports as one of the world’s great endurance athletes.

NAT FAULKNER: The 31 year old raced pro cycling for a dozen years winning many races around North America. A current record holder for the RACE ACROSS AMERICA, Faulkner returned to triathlon in 2008, where he won the amateur 70.3 in California, had the fastest swim-bike time at Ironman Wisconsin, and then finished 6th place amateur with the days 3rd fastest amateur bike at Hawaii. In 2009 Faulkner raced the epic Ironman Nice and Canada courses as well as 70.3’s in St Croix and New Orleans. Few people know more about time trialing, aerodynamics and making a bike go fast. Nat and Sean are team-mates and will be at each camp and training for their own major 2010 race goals.

CARON SHEPLEY: The 9X Ironman finisher, and World Age Group Silver Medalist is best known for her POWER-YOGA and CORE-INJURY PREVENTION classes. Caron will be at select camps. The camps that Caron will not be at, we will have additional core/yoga specialists attending.

DAVID SHARRATT: The 2X College Running Gold Medalist and elite triathlete will be spending his first complete winter out of college. David will be training for his own early season Ironman and will be doing some co-coaching with camper (focusing on the run and bike).

OTHERS TO BE NAMED: Many other elite and age group medalist athletes will be attending the camps but are not yet confirmed based on their race calendars.

The Hotel has a weight room, pool, hot-tub, comes with a great morning breakfast AND in-room microwave and mini-fridges to allow modest in-room cooking. TRI-CAMP FOCUS: Each athlete will be following customized programs that are designed to meet your specific needs. In general, tri-camps will focus on the biking #1, swimming #2, running # 3, core & injury prevention # 4 and hiking/seminars # 5. Individualized changes will occur based on specific participant needs.

TUCSON HIKES: Tucson has some of the most prestigious hikes in the world. Each tri and bike camp, will have 1-2 optional awesome hikes during the camp. For those who have been to previous PB camps, new hikes will be used in 2009.

VAN SUPPORT: Each camp has an option of going in the team van or having your own transport, to give you more freedom.

BIKE TRANSPORTATION: We are looking at an option of having someone drive a van down with bicycles. If this option occurs, there will be an additional cost for the service. No specifics are currently concrete.

SPECIFIC CAMP DETAILS:

APRIL 24TH TO MAY 1ST LAST CHANCE WARM-WEATHER TUCSON TRAINING CAMP:

This camp is designed to catch athletes as they are just getting ready for proper outdoor training. Instead of freezing for a week back home, why not get a picture perfect, warm big training week with the camp pros before they leave Tucson Arizona. This final camp is designed for the age group triathlete (newbie or advanced) who is looking for a solid week of instruction AND training to support their 2010 goals. The camp will include 4-6 swims, 4-6 bikes, 3-4 runs, 1-2 hikes and 2-3 core/yoga classes with Caron Shepley. Coaches will break campers into group’s based on their instructional, skill and fitness needs. We can accommodate sprint athletes all the way up to Ironman competitors. Every year, a few campers will skip a workout or two to sit by the condo pool or to go shopping/ siteseeing on their own (perfectly acceptable). Un-official evening suppers at local restaurants are encouraged by the coaching staff. Tucson was recently picked as the best city in American for exercise and you will find that out by the end of the week. Each Friday, campers ride the 25 miles (van supported) to the top of Mt Lemmon and then finish off with a big evening social/supper to celebrate the huge achieement.

CAMP GOALS: Campers come to the warm weather camp for 3 reasons.

  • To increase skills.
  • To increase base fitness.
  • Vacation / warm weather training relaxation

Each participant needs to let camp staff know their specific needs. It could include training for a specific race(s) or simply to learn more skills. Every camp has a wide range of athletes in each category.
